Dr Z S Meharwal

Biography

Dr. Z.S. Meharwal serves as the Chairman and Head of Adult Cardiac Surgery, Heart Transplantation and VAD program, apart from being part of the founding faculty at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute. With over 30 years of experience in cardiac surgery and over 30000 cardiac surgeries, including complex cardiac surgeries and Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVADs), he has been a pioneer in many of the new cardiac operations introduced in India. He has been actively involved with teaching and training. He is the Programme Director of DNB Cardiothoracic Surgery at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute. 

He has trained many cardiac surgeons in India and abroad, who are now practicing independently as cardiac surgeons in different centres. He has been invited as faculty in several national and international meetings and has extensively published in peer reviewed national and international journals. Dr. Meharwal's contribution to the field of Cardiac Surgery has been recognized by the President’s award and several other awards for his contribution to the field of Cardiac Surgery. He is a member of the Indian Association of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeons, Cardiological Society of India, Asian Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, and International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery.

Dr. Meharwal received the Citation Award from President of India, Sri APJ Abdul Kalam, during the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Meeting-2002, Saharanpur, and the Aditya Samman from the Gov. of UP for his contribution in the Medical field-2005.  He was also recognized in Limca Book of Records-2008, for being the first and only surgeon to successfully perform Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery on a 94-year-old individual, who held the record for oldest patient for CABG.
