First Aid in the First 48–72 Hours: The PEACE & LOVE Principles
To improve the healing process for soft tissue injuries, the conventional RICE approach (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) has been modified to a more complete framework called PEACE & LOVE.
PEACE (Apply Immediately After Injury)
Protect: Minimise pressure through your ankle during the initial 1–3 days after sustaining an ankle injury. You may need to use crutches to ensure you do not increase your chance for further injury as a result of putting too much weight through that foot.
Elevate: To reduce swelling, keep your injured foot elevated above your heart as much as possible.

LOVE (Apply After the First Few Days)
Load (L): Start to move and put some weight on the ankle slowly and within the limits of any pain that is experienced so that healing can occur.
Optimism (O): Remain hopeful and assured; the mind has an important effect on how well you recover from injury.
Vascularisation (V): Do some gentle, pain-free cardio exercise (e.g. cycling or swimming) to get blood flowing into the damaged area.
Exercise (E): Use rehab exercises to help you regain full range of motion, strength and balance.
Avoid HARM in the First 48–72 Hours
H (Heat): Do not apply heat via heating pad, hot bath/shower or sauna.
A (Alcohol): Alcohol may promote swelling and slow recovery time.
R (Running): Refrain from running and strenuous exercise.
M (Massage): Rule out strong/deep massage for the first few days post-injury.
Treatment Options For Torn Ankle Ligaments
